Awesome Training Run
A week ago I did an awesome 43 mile trail run right at the base of Mt. Rainier. The views were INCREDIBLE! I had to share since it's just so beautiful and the run was so much fun!
I was previewing the White River 50 mile course, which I will be racing in 3 weeks. It's a lead up race for my 100 the end of August. This course is tough and extremely mountainous with rocky, debris covered trails. I even crossed a raging stream today and climbed over 10 foot high snow drifts at the top of the peak. I don't think there is any hope of the snow melting in less than 2 weeks, so I might want to pack some skis!

Here’s a little about me: Married. 2 boys not yet in school. Born in Ohio and lived there until we moved to Washington (state) in October 2010. Came here for a job – have since started a love affair with trail running. I’ve been running for 22 years, during which the distance I prefer to race has gradually increased. I’m approaching 50,000 miles on my legs, which is hard for even me to believe. I remember my mother betting me I wouldn’t get to 5,000. This year I’ve started running ultramarathons for the first time, something I’ve anxiously awaited for years. Trail running is something new to me – there isn’t a lot of trail in Ohio! I’m embracing the change and the awesome places trail running takes me!
I don’t do things half-way in my life. When I commit to something, I’m there 110%. My entry into ultras has been no different. I set my sights on running a 100 this year. And not just “any” 100, I signed up for Cascade Crest 100 (CCC). I must admit, I am a little intimidated by running up mountains in addition to tackling the 100 distance for the first time… but BRING IT! Focusing my training on the 100, I signed up for Capitol Peak 50 in April and White River 50 in July. Capitol Peak went well, considering it was my first 50. I finished in 10:08. I had some stomach issues and clearly had a lot of nutritional “learning” to do. After some recovery, my quest toward CCC was officially underway! I’ve spent the past few months teaching my body how to handle the stress of repeatedly running for 7-8 hours. I’m proud of how much of a machine my body has become – and how much running I can actually do with proper fuel. I’m excited for what the future holds and finding my potential in 100 milers and beyond!!
